About the Message list

In Microsoft Outlook Express, the contents of a mail folder appear as a list of messages, with information about each message displayed in columns. You can choose what information you want to show by adding or removing columns from the list. You can also sort the messages by any of the column headings. For example, you can arrange the messages by date received, either in ascending order (starting with the oldest message) or descending order (starting with the most recent message). Or, you can list the messages alphabetically by sender name.

If you don't want to see all of the messages in a folder, you can filter the Message list to show only certain messages. For example, you can hide all messages except those about a certain subject, or you can hide all messages except those from a certain person.

You can flag important messages that you want to follow up on. When you flag a message, Flag symbol appears next to the message in the Message Status column. You can then sort your messages so that flagged messages appear at the top of the list.

In Outlook Express, you can search your folders for messages using criteria that you specify. If a search is successful, the results appear in a Message list in a separate window.

About grouping messages by subject

To help yourself organize the many replies that can result from a single message, also called threads, you can group messages by subject in the Message list. When you group messages by subject, Microsoft Outlook Express displays all of the replies to a message under the original message. This means you can view only the original message in a group or you can expand the group to view the original message and all of the replies to it.
